1. Beware of clinics that offer Intense Pulse Light (IPL) for Hair Removal. The facts are IPL is NOT permanent and only stunts hair growth for a period of time.
2. Beware of clinics that offer a 100% removal “guarantee”. The FDA has band laser companies from making such guarantees, but unfortunately local clinics are not governed by any regulators.
3. Protect your safety! Ask if the clinic doubles laser parameters with a senior expert or physician each time. If they are unsure what you mean you may want to avoid this provider or do more research.
4. Ask how many laser treatments the clinic performs per year and what their incident rate is (how many clients have been burned). If they do not know choose another provider.
5. Beware of clinics with bargain pricing. FDA approved gold standard lasers and top quality technicians are expensive; if it is a “deal” you are often putting both your money and your safety at risk.
6. Beware of clinics that offer hair removal for blond or white hair. As much as we would love to tell you it is possible, it simply is not! The laser targets and travels on the pigment in the hair shaft, if there is no pigment it cannot destroy the follicle. You may get temporary reduction for a few months but the hair will grow back and often thicker as the follicle becomes stimulated.
7. Individuals with darker skin types: Be aware that IPL is not safe or effective for you. In order to avoid burning your skin the machine will be turned down thus causing miniaturizing of the hair (finer and whiter) making it impossible to ever treat permanently. The only effective laser for you is either an ND YAG or a Diode.
8. Beware that unless the provider is doing a full health history and medication evaluation before every treatment you are not safe!
9. Shaving prior to treatment is required but NEVER wax. If a clinic suggests you wax prior to treatment avoid this clinic. The laser light must travel down the hair shaft to destroy the follicle removing the hair renders the treatment ineffective and increases the risk of burning.
10. Be aware that even the best laser in the hands of an under qualified or under supervised technician can render your treatment ineffective or even worse, dangerous.
