BOTOX®
What you need to know

  1. Is BOTOX® safe?. Yes! With a 20 year track record and numerous medical uses BOTOX® is amongst the safest and most researched medications in the world. BOTOX® gained use cosmetically when it was discovered that tiny amounts injected superficially, with precision, would temporary relax the overly expressive facial muscles that cause wrinkles.
  2. Be sure a physician is involved!. This is a drug and by law it must be administered under the licensed supervision of a physician specifically trained in the use of cosmetic BOTOX®. A physician may delegate the act of injecting to a nurse injector but the physician must still be involved in your initial assessment.
  3. Beware if a clinic that sells by the area. BOTOX® is sold by the unit. Every individual has a unique muscle structure (which is what creates wrinkles) and therefore it is impossible to price any individual’s treatment the same as another. When sold by the area the client may be under treated or may overpay for BOTOX® not used during their treatment.
  4. A millimeter makes a difference! If injected incorrectly a treatment may be rendered ineffective or, in rare cases, temporarily disfiguring (minimum 6-12 weeks). Ask how long the injector has been performing BOTOX® injections and what their training is. Do not be shy to ask for certificates of qualifications, after all this is your face!
  5. Ask the clinic what their dilution ratio is. BOTOX® comes in a dry form which must be reconstituted with saline. The correct dilution ratio is 1 - 1, as set out by the pharmaceutical manufacturer. If BOTOX® is over diluted the client may be paying for more saline (basically water) than BOTOX®.
  6. If an injector under injects the treatment area or over dilutes your BOTOX® the treatment will become ineffective and will fail in approximately 6 weeks. When a BOTOX® treatment is done correctly the treatment will take effect in approximately 5 to 10 days and will last for a minimum of 3 months up to 6 months or more (depending on the individual client).
  7. Do not allow a clinic to perform a BOTOX® treatment in the same area more than once in a 3 month period. Even if you were under dosed or were injected with diluted BOTOX® you must wait 3 months to have the treatment redone as your body may otherwise develop immunity to the treatment rendering any future BOTOX® treatments ineffective.
  8. Ask the clinic if a two week follow up appointment is required. Top injectors will insist on seeing you two weeks following a treatment even if you say everything is perfect. This will allow the injector to chart your results, do photos and to do a touch up of a few units, if required, to perfect the treatment (but never a reinjection of the full area).
  9. Ask if the clinic has a medical grade camera system to document treatments (a point and shoot does not offer the consistency of lighting and resolution)Make sure the clinic takes photos before, immediately after and at your two week follow up appointment so that they have full documentation of your treatment progress.
  10. Be aware that every clinic is required to perform and chart a full health history and medical evaluation before every BOTOX® treatment.
