What to Expect During a Laser Hair Removal Treatment
Prior to your first treatment, you will need to have a consultation with one of our highly knowledgable treatment consultants. During the consultation, we will need to review any medications you have been taking and get an understanding of your general health history. A customized treatment package will be established for you based on your skin and hair colour to ensure the highest results are achieved.
If you are on medications that could create photosensitivity, or if there is an issue in your medical history that could result in a less than ideal treatment, we will either perform a test spot or inform you that laser hair removal may not be safe or effective at that time. Each person receiving laser treatments will be required to wear protective eyewear. You will still be able to see a flash of light, but your eyes will be completely covered and protected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I able to have LHR if I have a tan?
Excessive sun exposure either before or after laser treatments is not advised. We will not perform laser hair removal on individuals who have had or will have excessive sun exposure immediately before or immediately after laser treatments. Individuals who go to tanning beds are never good candidates for laser hair removal as this concentrated form of UVA light is considered by many to be far more dangerous than traditional sun exposure. Therefore, you will need to be willing to discontinue going to the tanning beds prior to committing to laser treatments.
Should I shave the treatment area before my appointment?
Yes! We ask that you shave the area to be treated approximately 48 hours prior to your scheduled laser appointment. Patients are typically much more comfortable shaving themselves, however we can schedule you in to be prepped for the hard to reach areas. We also ask that you are freshly showered or bathed with completely clean skin, without lotions, creams or fragrances of any kind before coming in. Following a treatment you may feel a little sensitive, but generally people just feel very clean and sleek. More good news is you don’t need to wait for hair to grow in like waxing, you can continue shaving any hair you see as soon as 3 days after receiving your treatment.
Is laser hair removal safe and effective for everyone?
The Cynosure Elite is FDA cleared for permanent hair reduction on all skin types, including very fair, olive or African-American skin. Treatments are most effective on medium to dark hair on any skin type. Fine and light hair is difficult but not impossible to treat. Unfortunately white and gray hair cannot be treated.
What can I expect during treatment?
Your Premier Medical Spa technician may apply a topical anesthetic to help make the treatment more comfortable if you are overly sensitive, however this is very rarely needed and most clients tolerate it very well. Most patients feel a warm sting as the laser penetrates the hair follicle. Many people describe the sensation as the snap of a rubber band against their skin.
How many treatments are needed?
Laser treatments impair the growth capacity of the hair follicles when they are in the active growth stage. Not all follicles are active at the same time therefore several treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart will be necessary to obtain the desired result. Most patients experience a dramatic reduction in hair growth after the first treatment.
What should I expect following each treatment?
Once your treatment session is complete, you are free to resume your normal routine. Some patients might experience a slight redness in the treated area. This will resolve in a day or two.
You should be prepared to avoid anything that will elevate your body temperature for 24-48 hours after each treatment (working out, hot baths/showers, hot tubs, steam rooms etc.) as this could result in adverse reactions.
Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen following any laser treatment. You will not notice reduction in the hair growth for two to three weeks following each visit. Treated hairs need to be expelled from the follicle. Any hair that has been treated will not grow back after it falls out.
